What is an Aerial Survey?

Aerial surveys capture high-resolution images and geographical and topographic information of a large area of land, and are used for a variety of purposes and industries, from land surveying to construction planning and monitoring.

We utilise advanced drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), due to their aerial photography capabilities, their hardware compatablities, and their freedom of movement. They can fly closer to the ground and capture more data with high-resolution images than traditional surveys. They can also be equipped with a variety of sensors, including LiDAR and thermal imaging.

How much does an aerial survey cost?

Aerial surveys start from £400 in prices, but costs can go into the several thousands, depending on a wide range of factors, including, but not limited to:

The size and scope of the project or property- The wider the area or the more buildings you need surveying, the longer it takes.
The complexity of the properties layout - The more complex the dimensions of a building, for example, the longer it will take to map accurately.
The level of detail requested - If you need extreme levels of detail, this requires flying closer to the ground or building, which means more flights are needed.
The type of data output required - If you want your data in lots of different outputs or formats, this means longer to process and more time spent editing.
The complexity of the software and hardware needed - Thermal imaging surveys typically cost slightly more than your standard surveys.

What is photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry is a technique where we collect information from hundreds of 2D aerial images captured by our drones, measuring elevation, distance and angles.

These overlapping images can then be combined using specialist software to create a realistic 3D model or digital twin of topographical surfaces and physical structures.

What is an orthomosaic?

In simple terms, an orthomosaic is like a traditional aerial survey from a plane or a satellite, but in much more detail and clearer. It is essentially a large map created by stitching together many smaller photographs, called orthophotographs, or ‘orthos’.

Do you offer aerial surveys in urban areas?

Yes. We adhere to all industry guidelines and will acquire proper planning and permissions necessary to conduct surveys in urban areas.

What can drone surveys be used for?

How do drone surveys compare to traditional ground surveys?
